アメリカ・マサチューセッツ州ローウェルに生まれたジャック・ケルアック（1922-1969）は、1947年よりヒッチハイクで代表小説『On the Road（オン・ザ・ロード）』のもととなるアメリカ大陸横断の旅を始めました。1957年に同小説が出版されると、多くの愛読者と熱狂的な信奉者を生み、文学の枠を超え、映画や音楽などさまざまなカルチャーに多大な影響を与えました。
本展では、ジャック・ケルアックとその周辺のビート・ジェネレーションと呼ばれる作家たちに焦点を当て、ケルアックの全著書の初版本やビート作家たちの旧蔵本、日本のカウンターカルチャー黎明期のミニコミ誌まで、初公開の資料を含む300余点を出品し、その魅力に迫ります。
展示は４つのセクションに分類し、１:ジャック・ケルアックの全著作の初版本及び資料、２:ビート・ジェネレーション作家の稀覯本、３:シティライツ書店とリトルマガジン、４:ゲーリー・スナイダーと日本のビート・ジェネレーション、の順に紹介します。
また、本展では、ケルアック エステートとジム・アーセー コレクションの協力を得て、ジャック・ケルアックがタイプライターで21日間打ち続けて書き上げたといわれる『On the Road』のスクロール原稿（全⾧約36ｍ）を印刷再現し、公開します。

アメリカ・マサチューセッツ州生まれ。コロンビア大学で、後にビート・ジェネレーションと呼ばれる作家仲間、アレン・ギンズバーグやウィリアム・バロウズらに出会う。
主な著書に『地下街の人びと』(1958)、『ザ・ダルマ・バムズ』(1958)、『荒涼天使たち』(1965)、そして短編集『孤独な旅人』(1960)などがある。
ボブ・ディランやデヴィッド・ボウイ、ブルース・スプリングスティーンといったミュージシャンやヴィム・ヴェンダース、ジム・ジャームッシュといったロードムービーを語る上では欠かせない映画監督にも影響を与えた。

『 On the Road （オン・ザ・ロード）』(1957)

ケルアックの代表作『On the Road 』は、語り手 サル・パラダイスの心眼を通して、第二次世界大戦後のアメリカを生きる人々の姿が雄大な風景に彩られながら映し出されている。与えられた人生を人々はどのように生きているのか。サルは、路上で遭遇する人々や出来事の繋がりに想いを巡らせながら、常にホーボー（渡り労働者）のような放浪者たちに魅了される。サルが出会う「いかれた」連中は、自由なモダンジャズに魂を震わせ、夜のローマ花火のように炸裂する。そんな連中を彼は追い求めていくのである。

Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), a Beat Generation novelist and poet who had a major influence on American culture and counterculture after World War II, is most famous for his novel On the Road. The exhibition explores Kerouac’s literary innovation, his position in the Beat Generation, and their cultural influence.
Jack Kerouac was born into a French-Canadian immigrant family in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. In 1947, he began a hitchhiking trip across America, the basis of his novel On the Road. When the novel was published in 1957, it generated many young readers and enthusiastic followers, making Kerouac famous.
This exhibition presents a high-quality facsimile of Kerouac’s typescript that he made by typing on long sheets of paper for 21 days in April, 1951, resulting in a 36-meter long typescript that he rolled into a scroll.
Also, visitors will see vintage typewriters, rare photographs, and, with the cooperation of Mr. Kazuhiro Yamaji, owner of Flying Books in Tokyo, Kerouac’s first editions, Kerouac’s signature, and altogether more than three hundred Beat Generation items. Books and other printed materials will be displayed in 4 sections. 1: First editions of all titles by Jack Kerouac, 2: Rare first editions by Beat Generation writers, 3: City Lights Books and little magazines, 4: Gary Snyder and Japanese Beat Generation writers. With these related materials, visitors will grasp the value of Kerouac’s achievement and recognize the Beat Generation’s ongoing cultural relevance.

Jack Kerouac (1922-1969/Novelist, Poet)

Born in Massachusetts, USA. At Columbia University he met fellow artists Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs who came to be called the Beat Generation writers. Kerouac’s major books include The Subterraneans (1958), The Dharma Bums (1958), Desolation Angels (1965) and collected stories Lonesome Traveler (1960). In addition to musicians such as Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Bruce Springsteen, Kerouac also influenced film directors such as Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch, who created their own road movies.

On the Road (1957)
Kerouac’s masterpiece illuminates the lives of people who lived in America after World War II. Sal Paradise, the narrator, travels through the magnificent American landscape and meditates on the connections between people and events he encounters on the road. How do people live their lives? Sal also is fascinated by wandering figures such as hoboes and pursues those who “burn like fabulous Roman candles,” while stimulated by the spontaneity of modern jazz.
